High Level of Enthusiasm for IOM Oceania Regional Event

Jan 23, 2020

The level of interest in the IOM Oceania Regional Championship has exceeded expectations with expressions of interest exceeding the anticipated sixty competitors.

Expressions of interest to participate in the event are sitting at seventy eight being 30% higher than the maximum entry level of 60. This has been driven by a good level of interest from both Australia & New Zealand along with international competitors from USA, Singapore, Chile & Spain. The response is encouraging and reflects the desire of sailors in our region to compete at a regional championship level, which for some will be comparable to a world championship that is out of reach due to the limited access to qualifying positions or logistically challenging.

The organising committee are working closely with the host club, Pegasus Radio Sailing Club, with the planning for the event progressing well. The Notice of Race is in the final stages of preparation and is anticipated to be released in the coming weeks.

While Australian & New Zealand sailors will be required to qualify through their applicable ranking systems, our international guests have a separate qualification process as outlined below:

International Guests – allocation R1:

Places for international guests shall be allocated by region with the number of places per region as follows:

North America              – 2 places
South America              – 2 places
Europe                          – 2 places
Asia                              – 2 places
Africa                            – 1 place
World Champion            – 1 place

Places for each region above will be allocated based on the highest overall position in the preceding world championship event, after which, where an international guest did not participate in the world championship positions shall be awarded in order of receipt of expression of interest.

Allocation of round 1 places will be completed by 28 February 2020 with acceptance (by submission of entry) to be completed by 21 March 2020.

International Guest - Allocation R2:

After the completion of R1 allocations, allocations of any remaining places shall be awarded in order of receipt of expression of interest. The allocation will be completed by 31 March 2020 with acceptance acceptance (by submission of entry) by 21 April 2020.

We look forward to welcoming you to Christchurch for the inaugural IOM Oceania Regional Championship. See ya there!

A spectacular radio sailing venue!

Multiple courses areas, great prevailing winds, grassed rigging areas, dry launching into fresh water. It doesn't get much better!
